Scoil Ruadháin, Tullaroan, Kilkenny

The annual swimming gala was held in the Watershed at the end of June. The school team did very well, winning several medals, and an enjoyable day was had by all.

Tommy and Pádraig Walsh came to the school to present the children with their hurling and camogie medals. We very much appreciate their giving their time to make the occasion a memorable one for the children.

Scoil Ruadháin beat Glenmore to win the Camogie Shield Final 2016. Chloe Glennon, Grace Keoghan, Leona Lanigan, Laura McCabe, Ciara O’Shea and Leanne Simpson have now won camogie medals in Roinn D, Roinn C, Roinn B and Roinn A.

Scoil Ruadháin was delighted to receive its second School Excellence Award on Wednesday May 25, in Kilkenny Education Centre. The Excellence Award was run in conjunction with Waterford Institute of Technology and this year’s theme was ‘Supporting Healthy Schools’.

On June 25th, Tommy and Pádraig Walsh visited the school to present medals to the members of both the Camogie team, which won the Roinn B Competition, and the Hurling team, which won the Roinn D  Hurling League.

On the 2nd of December, 6th class pupil Ríonach got to go to Dublin’s Croke Park for a very special book launch. Too Cold for Sharks is a new book made in partnership with the Health and Safety Authority, Kilkenny Ed. Centre, the Association of Teachers’ Ed. Centres in Ireland … and 84 children from all over Ireland.

Ríonach is one of those children. She won the 5th /6th classes category of the HSA Ocean Safety art and writing competition. Her entry was selected from 3,300 entries, last spring. In June she was invited to attend a workshop in Kilmore Quay where she, along with the other contributors, worked with artists and authors to produce the book about Ocean Safety and fishing life. It is filled with children’s stories, anecdotes and artwork about ocean safety and fishing life. It is a book aimed at helping children learn about the dangers of the ocean and how to stay safe. The entries explored coastal life, visiting the ocean, the life and work of fisherman, the work of the Coast Guard, the importance of knowing how to swim, and the use of life jackets and life rings.

It is an amazing achievement for Ríonach, and we are very proud of her. Well done, Ríonach!
